The pattern of the weather during the growing season was similar to that of the previous year, but even more marked. That is to say, the summer was not overly hot, leading to the development of true cool climate riesling aromas and flavours, with the retention of good acid. Then followed the most perfect, lingering autumn with warm, dry, calm days. The growing season was thus lengthened and the fruit was not picked until May when it was beautifully ripe and in perfect condition.
The whole berries were gently pressed and the clarified juice was slowly fermented at cool temperatures to maintain the purity of the vineyard and varietal characters. It was then left to clarify and bottled in October 2002.
The bouquet and taste give intertwining characters of citrus and stone fruits with floral overtones. Lime, lemon and grapefruit seem to be intermingled with hints of nectarine and white peach. There are also elements of ripe melon, spice and white pepper. The flavours go right through the concentrated palate, and linger tantalisingly on its crisp off-dry finish.
While this wine is ready to drink, it should, with careful cellaring, become even more expressive and complex over the following decade. It is anticipated it will live for 20 years or more.
Wine is a natural health food.
