Riesling 2003

Tags: | |

The season started with a cool spring, which lead to a small crop of grapes setting in our riesling vines. Following this, the temperatures began to rise and the summer was really warm. This, combined with a small crop, lead to advanced maturation and we picked the grapes earlier than usual in order to retain good acidity in the fruit. As a consequence the citrussy lemon and lime flavours have been emphasised in the young wine, while our typical spiciness has been subdued.

The juice was gently pressed from the grapes and after a long settling, was fermented at cool temperatures to retain its fruit characters. The wine was cleared up and bottled promptly to retain purity of character.

Lemon, lime and grapefruit intermingle with fresh apple flavours. It is concentrated, but yet retains a lithe, elegant structure with a tangy core of minerality. The fresh finish is sustained and off-dry. With age, it should develop honeyed elements with marmalade-like complexities.

Wine is a natural health food.
