Our aged release program started back in 2006 when we set aside a few cases of our key varieties, Riesling & Pinot Noir, with the intention of releasing them in 2016, 10 years later. Stock has been set aside every vintage since with a release date of around August each year. The inspiration for this came from the desire to offer our customers the opportunity to taste these wines in full maturity, something that is relatively rare these days. We consider this to be a particularly satisfying time to experience these wines with the added complexities of bottle age, while still offering years of good drinking ahead.
An exceptionally early budburst was brought about by a very mild spring. Warm summer days with cool nights and a balmy, dry autumn produced healthy, perfectly ripened grapes with vibrant fruit flavours. It was a splendid season in general and an exceptional one for riesling, producing wines of high quality.
The colour is vibrant crimson with hints of brown towards the edges. The bouquet evokes black cherries, blackberries, raspberries and mulberries. These impressions of fruit however are underlain with savoury hints of grilled mushrooms, barbequed meats and wood-smoke. Such tertiary notes have become more pronounced due to the extended maturation time in bottle. It initially seems soft in the mouth but rapidly expands to become powerful, while at the same time remaining refined and elegant. A spine of ripe tannins flows through the wine and helps draw out its lingering after-taste.
