Our aged release program started back in 2006 when we set aside a few cases of our key varieties, Riesling & Pinot Noir, with the intention of releasing them in 2016, 10 years later. Stock has been set aside every vintage since with a release date of around August each year. The inspiration for this came from the desire to offer our customers the opportunity to taste these wines in full maturity, something that is relatively rare these days. We consider this to be a particularly satisfying time to experience these wines with the added complexities of bottle age, while still offering years of good drinking ahead.
The spring of 2009 was one of the warmest ever recorded so the vines got off to a good start with an early bud burst. Late spring and early summer however, were unseasonably cool and cloudy, sufficiently slowing the development of the grapes to cause us concern. The skies then cleared and we had three to four months of unbroken sunshine. This enabled us to leave the fruit on the vine to attain excellent maturity and ripeness.
The generous bouquet and flavours are suggestive of ripe apples, lemons, limes, nectarines and white fleshed peaches. There are also hints of mandarin and orange marmalade, refelcting the wine’s extended maturarion time in bottle. While it is full flavoured and concentrated, the wine is also elegant and refined with a spine of fine acidity and zesty minerality which flow through the palate and draw out its length in a crisp off-dry finish.
